Urinary Tract Infection Q & A
What is a UTI?
A UTI is an infection that develops in any part of your urinary system, including your bladder, kidneys, ureters, or urethra. UTIs occur in both men and women, but women are more prone to the infection due to their anatomy. While UTIs can be easily treated, if you don’t get the care you need, your UTI can lead to more serious health issues that may impair kidney function.
What are the symptoms of a UTI?
UTIs don’t always cause symptoms, and in older adults, the symptoms may be mistaken for other health issues. Common symptoms that may indicate a UTI include:
- Frequent urination
- Burning sensation when you urinate
- Feeling the need to urinate, but unable to go
- Foul-smelling urine
- Blood-tinged urine
- Pelvic pain
- Fever
Your symptoms may also vary depending on what part of your urinary system is affected. For example, you may experience nausea and vomiting with a kidney infection and pelvic pain with a bladder infection.
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, or suspect you may have a UTI, contact the team at Pinnacle Health Group to schedule an appointment so you can get the relief you need quickly.
How is a UTI diagnosed?
Your Pinnacle Health Group provider conducts a comprehensive examination to determine if your symptoms are due to a UTI. In addition to reviewing your symptoms and medical history, your practitioner also completes a physical exam and runs a urine test to check for bacteria.
What treatment do I need for a UTI?
Your Pinnacle Health Group provider prescribes an antibiotic to clear up your UTI. You should start to feel better within a few days after you start the medication, but be sure to take your antibiotics as prescribed to prevent your UTI from coming back. If you have recurrent UTIs, your practitioner may recommend more long-term antibiotic treatment.
While you’re taking your medication for your UTI, be sure to drink plenty of fluids to help flush out the bacteria.
UTIs are common and can clear up quickly with the right treatment. For relief from your UTI symptoms, call Pinnacle Health Group today or request an appointment online. Walk-ins are also welcome.
